The Elevator Advantage: Where You Stand Could Save You
Your daily protective insight for smarter, safer living.

You step into an elevator — alone or with strangers — and for a split second, you feel that tiny voice asking: Am I safe here?
Most people never think about where they stand inside an elevator, but this small decision can make all the difference if something doesn’t feel right. Elevators are enclosed spaces with only one exit. If someone makes you uncomfortable — or worse — your ability to act fast matters.
Placing yourself in front of the buttons isn’t just smart — it’s strategic. It gives you control over three things that can help you escape or get help immediately: the emergency alarm, the ability to open the doors on any floor, and a direct path out when those doors slide open.
Here’s how to put this into practice starting today:
✔️ Stand in front of the control panel. This keeps you close to the alarm, the Intecom, and the floor buttons.
✔️ Stay near the doors. Use the layout of the elevator to your advantage. Standing as close as you can to the front corner will keep you protected on both sides and will keep you from getting blocked in the back.
✔️ Trust your instincts. If someone makes you feel uneasy, it’s okay to get off. When in doubt…GET OUT!
✔️ Practice awareness. Before you step in, glance inside. If something feels off, wait for the next elevator.
✔️ Being polite is a courtesy. Protecting yourself is a priority. Your willingness to defend yourself should always be stronger than your unwillingness to offend another.
Awareness + Preparation = Safety
If you found this tip helpful, share it with a friend. You never know when one small shift in awareness could help keep them safe, too.
